Judy Schriener is a former long-time editor for McGraw-Hill Construction, most recently as editor of McGraw-Hill Construction’s online publications site, www.construction.com. She has written for Architectural Record, Engineering-News Record, and many other publications.
She is now a freelance writer who focuses exclusively on the phenomenon of aging baby boomers, particular on the social demographic aspects. While still at McGraw-Hill, she realized that aging baby boomers have an entirely different culture from the generation that preceded them. As a group, they are—
- More physically active.
- More likely to travel independently than in organized groups.
- More likely to choose active/adventure travel over "leisure" resort travel.
- More likely to change their home environment more quickly upon becoming empty-nesters.
- More likely to retire to urban/collegiate environments offering a broad array of cultural amenities than to Sunbelt retirement communities.
- More likely to continue to work and even start new businesses.
- More likely to be technologically-savvy.
- More likely to become involved in volunteer/charitable activities in a strategic, decision-making capacity instead of envelope-stuffing or other low-level activity.
