No two magazines are exactly alike, but many magazines of the same genre share common characteristics. Knowing what those traits are can help you secure freelance assignments. In this first workshop in a new occasional series, three editors will share inside tips about writing for urban lifestyle magazines, which typically cover a broad range of subjects with a highly local angle. Learn how these editors prefer to work with freelance writers, and how to pitch stories successfully for regular departments, feature stories, and perennial themes.

The recent WIW member survey indicated tremendous interest in magazine writing, which appeals to both freelance writers and writers with full-time jobs. The special interests that all writers have—aging, antiques, art, business, design, education, environment, faith, fashion, fishing, food, health, international affairs, music, movies, parenting, politics, sports, travel, theater and countless more—make every writer an expert. Each workshop in the series will focus on a different genre to help you turn your expertise into assignments.

Moderator Michael Tardif is a full-time freelance writer and editor, focused exclusively on architecture and design. He is the former editor of ArchitectureDC magazine, a regional consumer-oriented quarterly, writes a monthly design technology column for AIArchitect, a national professional e-zine, and is a regular contributor to New Old House, Waterfront Home & Design, and Washingtonian magazines. His work has also appeared in CE News and Bethesda magazines. His first book (with co-author Steve Wintner), Financial Management for Design Professionals, was published by Kaplan Publishing in December 2006.

Drew Lindsay is Features editor of Washingtonian magazine. He writes and edits stories about health, education, children, sports, politics, and other subjects. Before joining the magazine in 2001, Lindsay was editor of Teacher Magazine, a two-time National Magazine Award finalist for general excellence. He has also worked as a writer for Education Week and as a press aide on Capitol Hill. He was an assistant editor at Washingtonian in the early 1990s. A native of Atlanta, Lindsay was raised in Bethesda and graduated from Walt Whitman High School.

Steve Hull is Editor and Publisher of Bethesda Magazine. He has been in the magazine publishing business for more than 20 years. Before starting Bethesda Magazine, he spent 14 years as a senior executive with Atlantic Media Company (formerly National Journal Group), which publishes The Atlantic Monthly and National Journal. Prior to that, Hull was an editor of several business-to-business magazines, a newspaper reporter and editor, and a press secretary in the U.S. House of Representatives.
