Online Resources for Self-Publishers

www.inkthinkerblog.com — UPDATED MARCH 7, 2006, 11 p.m.

If you’re considering self-publishing your novel, nonfiction book, or poetry collection, make sure you educate yourself on the ins and outs of successful self-publishing.

This isn’t a comprehensive list, but here are some great websites and other reference lists to get you started on your research:

Book Marketing Update from brilliant publishing pro John Kremer, including a Self-Publishing Hall of Fame

Resources from Wexford Press:
Books with answers to marketing and publishing questions
Book coaches, consultants and packagers.

Dan Poynter’s Para Publishing
Tips, guides, and general information for book publishing, from creation to distribution and marketing.

Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Publishing
by Moira Allen
FAQs, articles by Moira Allen, and links to dozens of other articles and resources for self-publishing.

Go Publish Yourself
A Writer’s Digest Best Website for Writers in 2004 and 2005, a self-proclaimed “Pipeline of Self-Publishing Information & Resources.” Offers more than 30 helpful articles and several resources.

Self-Publishing at Writers-Write.com (sponsored by iUniverse, a POD printer)
Offers more than 25 articles on self-publishing, including interviews with experienced folks in the biz, as well as e-publishing and book promotion resources.

Why Self-Publish? from the Griffith Publishing School
Pros and cons, FAQs, tips on treating self-publishing as a business, and promotional ideas. Despite the huge link to their services page, seems to be a pretty straightforward, unbiased approach.

Self-Publish.ca
“Everything you need to know about publishing your own book.” Their tagline just about covers it. Caveat: The prices they list for editing services are quite low, so expect to pay more that what’s listed there – and remember that you get what you pay for, so better to spend a little more on a high-quality editor and end up with a high-quality product than to skimp on editing and spend thousands publishing a book that’s full of errors.

“How to Self-Publish Your Book,” from eHow.com
A good starting point. Use this as a guide for ideas and keywords to track down definitive information and sources to help you on your self-publishing journey.

Manuscript Showcase at RoseDog.com (CAUTION: I do NOT recommend posting your unpublished work without carefully researching the venue.)

Here’s an article I wrote last year about self-publishing and ebooks. Probably still relevant, although it looks like the Sony ebook reader will now be the platform of choice, not something from Amazon.com

Lulu.com also has a lot of mindshare.

Thought you would also be interested in Dan Ponyter’s Radio show …Publishing Poynters Radio. Very insightful and lively exchanges between Dan and other self-publishers debating the big questions self-publishers face. Topic include:
Spotting Self-Published Books; Should You Consider Paying for Book Reviews; Is Google Threatening Self-publishers; Can You Make a Living at Self-publishing?

You can listen online at http://www.parapublishing.com/sites/para/resources/pubradio.cfm

Note: currently looking for guest on a show we’re doing about product placement in books. I produce the program and would love to hear your thoughts.
