www.inkthinkerblog.com — Over the last month or so, I’ve had a lot of people ask me about word counts for books in various genres. Is it a novel? Is it a novella? Is it too long for a middle-grade novel? Is it too long for a fantasy novel? The thing is, what a publisher wants varies from publisher to publisher. Your best bet is to write the best book you can and make it as long as it needs to be.
“But I’ve edited it to death and I just can’t get it shorter than 325,000 words!” Okay, dearie, that’s way longer than it needs to be. Either you’ve got yourself a trilogy, or you’re rambling. Figure it out, and then fix it.
