Love at first sight

Meet the newest member of the King household: Pickles.

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Is this the cutest face you’ve ever seen, or what?

After about 30 minutes of the funniest play I’ve ever seen, one tinkle and two poops (all on my hardwood floor), Pickles collapsed and totally zonked out. She snoozed for about five minutes, until I had the bright idea to pick her up and try to put her in her extremely overpriced dog bed. You’d think I had electrocuted her or something the way she leapt to her feet and started playing frantically again. For some reason, she does not like the bed.

She also doesn’t like baths. We noticed a few unwelcome critters traversing her cute little body, so we popped her into the kitchen sink for an impromptu rub-a-dub-dub. She cried the whole time, even though the water was the right temperature and we used special puppy shampoo. It’s like the Biolage of puppy shampoo, so I don’t know what she was complaining about. We got most of the fleas off, but because she was shivering we pulled her out and wrapped her up in a beach towel. She immediately fell asleep, she and I got some mega cuddle time, which left me with a few fleas, but I’m pretty sure I killed the suckers when I took a marathon shower. Take that, disease-carrying vermin.

Even though we then rubbed her vigorously, switched her into a dry towel, and put her in her crate in a little puppy cocoon with a cozy little blanket, she slept like a rock. She’s still sleeping. My hope is that she doesn’t start fussing before 5 a.m. My expectation is that I’ll be up every 30 minutes checking to make sure she hasn’t spontaneously developed canine pneumonia. We’ll see how it goes.

    Kristen,

As if we haven’t already bonded enough today, I’m in complete shock looking at your pics of Pickles. You see, I have two pugs! Sparky (male) age 12, and Abbey (female) age 11.

With my children away at college, it is now my nearly full-time job to run a geriatric doggie day care. Abby had a stroke in January, but made a miraculouos recovery. Sparky has congestive heart failure, but has responded very well to his meds.

They can’t go up or down stairs anymore, but they still love to sunbathe out on the patio. I don’t know how long I’ll have with them, but I actually don’t mind having them all to myself right now either. They were two of the most loyal, devoted and gentle pets my children could have ever had, and I OWE them this peaceful time to just soak up the sun and all the love I can give them, until their intrepid pug spirits finally fade into the family photo album right along with all the pictures of my children when they were younger.

It brings me great joy to know how much love and joy your little pug Pickles will bring to your home and life.

I’ll e-mail you a pic of Sparky and Abby sunbathing out on my patio tomorrow.

    What an amazing coincidence!

Were we separated at birth??? This is nuts. :]

I hope you didn’t just dump water over her back. That’s what most people do, and the dogs really don’t like it–it’s quite alarming. Better is to get a hose/sprayer and gradually wet the dog down.

How adorable. She’s precious. She’s wonderful. Oh, Kristen, she’s divine!

L, we put her in about an inch and a half of water and let her snuffle around before gradually working our way up to maximum wetness. That part she didn’t seem to mind, but she didn’t like us holding onto her and rubbing the shampoo in. She smells a lot better now, though, so I think the trauma was worth it. :] I welcome any and all tips–this is my first puppy! And the adult dog I had during my teen years L-O-V-E-D baths and was already housebroken and past the puppy stage when we adopted him, so of course that’s no help.

D.E., if you think she’s divine now, wait ’til you MEET her! I’m bringing her with me at the end of the month. If you have any reason to come out my way either before or after I’m in your direction, you can meet her.

    She’s a doll baby! What a face! I love her name – that’s my daughter’s nickname. :)

I’m lucky my daughter isn’t looking over my shoulder because then I would NEVER EVER hear the end of begging for a new puppy (we’ve had a dog for nearly a year now, which we got when he was about 2 years old, from a rescue group–already housebroken and past the “chew everything” stage). WHAT an adorable pug! Did you get this one from a breeder?
