Resume city

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Last night I happened to meet someone who I’d love to work for on some editing projects. We cheerfully exchanged cards, but I had a moment of internal panic when I heard her say this:

Oh, great, yeah, send me your resume!

Um, resume? What’s that? Oh, wait, that’s that file that’s been gathering dust on my hard drive because I’m so completely dependent on my website. Right, that.

Needless to say, my resume needed a little updating, and it needed it fast. This morning I busted out the old one, giggled a little at what I saw, and started over from scratch to create a one-page resume and a heavily abbreviated one-page credit list, which I e-mailed out only moments ago.

Today’s homework:
– get a head start on your taxes
– make sure your resume is up to date

Class dismissed.

Aack. Did you catch that extra comma at the end of the Writer’s Digest listing on the resume? I am always doing stuff like that myself.

Of course not. That would have made me look entirely too competent.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Great format, best I’ve seen. Inspires me to do something livelier with mine! Now, to find the time . . . :)

Wow, thanks, J! For the longest time I’ve had this huge document that I HATED, and as I’m gradually bringing my website more in line with my personality, all of the other materials are falling into place as well. Unsolicited advice (if you want it): I stopped thinking about what I’m “supposed” to do and what it’s “supposed” to look like and started thinking about what I’d want to see if I were hiring someone. Does that mean I might be limiting myself to people who think like me? Yeah. But I think writers and editors are brilliant and deserve to be paid well for their expertise, so if the only folks who want to hire me now are ones who think like that, woohoo! ;]

Excellent advice, even though unsolicited :)

I have too much of the “supposed to’s” in my life.
