5 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Karen over at A Writer’s Blog just tagged me for a short meme, 5 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me. Read her responses here. Read mine below.

1. I’m a former Sussex County Honey Queen (click here to learn a little about my experience with honeybees) and a former Miss Green Township. For the second pageant, which I won during my senior year of high school, I beat out my arch nemesis, who was one of my best friends from sixth grade through ninth grade, when she went all Mean Girls on me. The $500 prize, the gift bag, and the fame were just gravy.

2. I have a thing for boys whose names begin with the letter J. From fifth grade through high school, I dated/”went out with” (translation: had awkward phone calls after school or in the evenings but never actually went anywhere or acknowledged each other’s existence otherwise) or had crushes (some a bigger waste of time/self-respect than others) on the following J’s: Jeff H., Joey M., Jeff W., Joey L., Jimmy, Joe R., Jon M., and Joe C., and then I married a guy named Jesse.

3. I can’t curl my tongue. I am the only person in my family who lacks this talent. When I was little, it used to make me cry.

4. I love to play Dance Dance Revolution, but I’m so terrible (and cheap!) that I do it only in the privacy of my own home, not at any of the arcades.

5. When I was 15, I spent a week in Lake George, New York, with my best friend at the time (who was arrested in 2005 for stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise by posing as Jessica Simpson’s best friend and personal assistant–several years after we lost touch, I swear) pretending that I was visiting from England. My name was Fiona Garret, and I spoke with an accent for 6 solid days. People believed me, despite how poor my accent actually was.

  • Kristen King Nov 19, 2006 Link

Oh my goodness, I’m so not sure if you’re kidding!

Thanks for posting on my Novel Blog and for sharing the link to your story about honey bees. My nephew has 12 hives and has been saving the money they generate to finance his college education.

Thanks! Your nephew has a great hobby and a rewarding business on his hands. Feel free to contact me privately if you or he have any questions. If I can’t help, I’m sure my mom, The Honey Lady, can or knows someone in your area who will.

You got me! I plan to post mine up after turkey day.

Hey there Kristen! I checked out your link from Deb Ng’s site and I can relate to Sussex County because I’m from there! I was also in the pageant for Miss Sparta, and thankfully although I didn’t win, my friend was the winner, not an arch nemesis. Ah, the trials of life in Sussex County!
    Good meeting you! Small world!

I can’t believe you’re from Sparta! Did you go to Sparta High School or Pope John? I was at Newton and graduated in 2000. I wonder how many people we have in common. :] Did you ever go to McGulick’s in White Deer Plaza at Lake Mohawk? I used to work there.

    Hey there Kristen!

Well, I’m a bit older, graduated from SHS 1989, but I had been to McGulick’s a number of times so we may have run into each other there! I’m sure I saw you in the paper as well when you were Miss Green. I actually work now with the Miss Lafayette Pageant and have since about 2003. Yes, our county’s very small, so maybe we can email privately and I’m sure we can do our own Kevin Bacon game and find out how we’re connected with different people! :)
On an interesting note, I forgot to mention, the Miss Sparta winner the year that I participated is still a good friend and is also a writer! She is on blogger too! Must be something with Sussex County Beauty Queens being inspired to write! ;)
