Hi Kristen!
At 8:44 AM this morning, I sent out my first query for the challenge. At 11:21 AM I received this reply:
That’s a great idea for an article, Harmony. Thank you! I would love to go ahead, though I can’t promise you the month we would publish it in quite yet. We work ahead editorial-wise, and I’ve already assigned articles out to April.
But if you’d like to go ahead and begin writing for now that would be great. As a local magazine that’s free for readers, we don’t have a whole lot to offer writers in terms of payment, however. So, if you’re okay with $100 as more of an honorarium for the piece that would be great.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks for your query,
[redacted]
I am so excited!! Yes, it is for a small amount and a free publication but this will be my very first clip – thanks again for starting the challenge.
Harmony
Congratulations, Harmony!

Way to go Harmony. Congratulations. I haven’t even got near the computer today, let alone send out any query letters. But the brain keeps ticking over. Tomorrow will be the day that I start the challenge.
Kristen, do query sent earlier in January count or is it officially from the 10th???
Cheers, Liz
Kristen, be sure to check out the breastcancer.org forums for your research — they have one devoted to prayer.
Sure wish I wasn’t an expert …
Congratulations, Harmony! I’m inspired, as I am also trying to get my first clips. I’d love to know if you wrote a long, detailed query, got an expert quote, etc. Why do you think it worked?
Congrats, Harmony. Hope the success continues.
Congratulations! I remember when I got my first clips. Much luck and success.
Thanks Kristen and everyone!
Julie: It was about one page in length (e-mail though) but included lots of details. I didn’t worry about the length, just on how it sounded. I didn’t have any expert quotes, but provided names of people I can contact as sources.
