Finding Article Ideas in Everyday Life

www.inkthinkerblog.com

This is kind of a no-brainer, but I’m participating in the Lieurance-King New Year’s Article Challenge. As part of the 21-day e-course co-host Suzanne and I are offering participants, I’m working on a list of potential article topics and beginning to outline some articles. It’s hard. Like, really hard. The thing is, I don’t think it’s actually that hard — I’m just making it difficult.

You see, I somehow got it in my head a few years ago that I’m not good at coming up with article ideas. Thus, I have a hard time coming up with article ideas. Part of the reason I really wanted to team up with Suzanne to do this challenge is that I wanted to help other people, and myself, get out of that “I can’t come up with any ideas!” mindset and just start writing.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

We can see where your mind is these days, Kristen. Here’s a fun website for DIY decorating, although its more geared towards renters: http://digsmagazine.com.

As for brainstorming ideas, here’s a trick I recently discovered: Since I went to a large school and stayed in the same city after graduation, I mine the alumni publications and student newspaper to see what current students and alums are up to. Often there are interesting profile ideas that haven’t been picked up by mainstream media yet AND the alumni connection gives me an in.

My problem is I have too many ideas, and I have to keep them very organized so I can pitch them to the appropriate markets.

    EVERYTHING inspires me!

Karen, I’ll take some of that wine! It’s been a crazy week, and it’s only Monday!

Susan, great idea. You should write an article about it. Oh, wait, you did, and it’s going to be in the next issue of Notes in the Margin. Never mind.

Dev, I don’t know how you do it. You’re amazing.

All this talk about ideas reminds me that I need to update my “idea list.”
I always have about 4 different ones (in 4 different places!)

Yes, ideas are everywhere…it’s just SO important to have that “writer mindset” tuned in!

    truly,
