Thursday afternoon, I received an e-mail from a marketing person whom I’ve never met at a moderately sized academic press that I’ve never worked for inquiring about my interest in some copywriting. This morning, I sent them a letter of agreement for a big project. How did they know about me? Someone had forwarded them my name.
I’m hoping to find out who that was so I can send a thank-you note, but in the meantime, I’d like to reiterate that networking is one of the most powerful tools in the freelancer’s arsenal. Getting to know people in your field, attending conferences and seminars, and actively participating in discussion lists/forums/etc. are all outstanding ways to get in front of potential clients — and potential referrers.

Now this is precisely why I encourage contact between writers and scientists at my blog. Trilingual meeting spot for authors and scientists.
Absolutely! That is one reason why I registered today with the NBAA, a terrific organization for those of us working in business aviation.
