Well, heck, I’d hire me! (I hope they feel that way…)

Thursday, March 8, 2007

I have an eye for detail, a flair for language, at 5+ years of experience writing and editing for business and publication, and I’m very interested in the freelance copywriting position you recently advertised on Craigslist. My resume is attached for your review, and here are some highlights of my freelance career:

Clients include…

– b5media (http://www.b5media.com/)
– George Washington University (Washington, DC)
– Georgetown University Press (Washington, DC)
– [redacted cuz it’s a secret] (Chicago, IL)
– Schum & Associates (McLean, VA)
– Steps For Living (Brooklyn, NY)

Projects include…

– Blogging (www.livelywomen.com)
– Brochure and flier design and copy
– Catalog copy
– Direct response postcards
– PowerPoint ad decks
– Web content

The bottom line: I’m good, I’m experienced, and I can get the job done.

I’m a full-time freelancer and am available during East Coast business hours at my regular rate of $XXX/hour and after hours (at my discretion) at an increased rate. My professional website, http://www.kristenkingfreelancing.com/, was a finalist in the 2006 Writer’s Digest Best Writer’s Website Contest, and my blog, www.inkthinker.blogspot.com, was named one of the Top 10 Blogs for Writers in 2006.

I would be delighted to learn more about [redacted]’s need for a freelance copywriter with lots of ideas and a fresh and flexible writing style. Would you please contact me at your convenience at kristen@kristenkingfreelancing.com
or 540-220-2184 to discuss? I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Kristen King

Hi Kristen, I have a question for you because I’ve encountered this issue too. I notice that you included a client in your query letter that you “redacted cuz it’s a secret” here. Not to get all smart-alecky here, but if it’s a secret, doesn’t that mean you can’t tell anyone? Where do you draw the line? Who can you tell and who can’t you tell?

I have specific permission from that particular client to use them as a reference when applying for jobs, but have been asked not to publicize it widely. So, I can send a private message as a job seeker, but not list them on my website, for instance. It depends on the agreement you have with an individual client.

    Hope that helps.

Kristen, that’s a stellar letter! I’d hire you too, if only I had something to hire you for.

Thanks, Kristen, that’s what I figured…special permission under certain circumstances. Oh yes, and in my haste to ask the question, I forgot to wish you luck on the query. Craigslist in always hit or miss with me. Sometimes I spend a lot of time tailoring my query and get no response. Other times, I dash off a short line or two and create interest. I wish I had a perfect system worked out, but I don’t.

Thanks for posting this; always good to see what a good pitch/query looks like.
