What Won’t You Write About?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Deb Ng brings up this intriguing question over at Freelance Writing Jobs.

Though 99% of my income comes from blogging, I do have the occasional copy or content writing gig. The other day a client approached me about writing some technical articles. I declined as I know nothing about the topic and didn’t feel qualified. I had someone else contact me recently about writing adult pieces, but I’m not comfortable with that. I tried writing erotica once, and it was rather embarrassing. …

So, I thought I’d throw out a fun question for the regulars. Are there topics or areas you won’t delve into ? What won’t you write about?

Have you ever thought about what topics would elicit a “No way, man!” from you? Share your thoughts here or over on Deb’s post, and be sure to check out the opinions folks have already shared.

And FYI, here’s my two cents:

…I…avoid adult material or anything that I feel promotes something I find morally reprehensible, both of which would make me really uncomfortable, and I also steer clear of graphic horror when I’m editing. I don’t want to get nightmares from my work!

I have strong religious beliefs, so it would be hard for me to write in an objective way on religious topics that are contrary to my beliefs. I fear I would have a very hard time not somehow injecting my opinions, even subconsciously. I also wouldn’t feel very good about promulgating information that could be something I feel is incorrect, like a differing interpretation of a central belief. It would be like a die-hard Republican writing pro-Democrat literature — it would be weird.

I’ve recently turned down two editing jobs because the books are in conflict with my Christian beliefs. I don’t feel qualified to edit children’s books, and there are some genres I wouldn’t like. Years ago, when I was editing for a publisher, I edited a book I hated. After I’d done the first chapter, I told the publisher I didn’t like it and asked if she would assign it to another editor, but she said she really wanted me to do it. I agreed but hated every minute of it and vowed never again to work on a project I didn’t love.

I’m somewhat of a writing tramp – I’ll take on nearly anything. However, I do remember turning down the man who casually mentioned his past as a woman. He broke that invisible barrier WAY too early. And I’d have turned down the couple looking for a writer to chronicle their swinging lifestyle – oh, and the writer needs to join in once in a while. Uh, no.

I don’t write for adult sites either although I’ve considered erotica…

I won’t write about anything that promotes war, which means I couldn’t write for the “defense” industry back in my tech writing days.

Thanks for the link love, Kristen. What a great response, huh! It’s interesting to see what writers will and won’t write!

Nice site, I’ll be back. I followed a link from another blog – it becomes like an adventure, you’re never really sure where you will end up.

I like to follow links and tried to with the blogs you like, but when you click on more, you just keep coming back to the same page. I’d love to see the rest of the list. :-)

I write on all topics to gain a broad experience, mostly in copywriting, but I don’t do anything against my morals.
