Q&A Time: How and Where Do I Post My Resume on Craigslist?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — After my post on One More Reason to Love Craigslist, I got several questions on exactly how one can use CL to advertise freelance writing and editing services.

Do you want to blog about what to include on a craigslist resume and show us some examples?

What to include:

  • Your name…not your “handle,” “nickname,” or “screen name”–this is business.
  • Your contact information…the real deal, not one of those anonymized CL e-mail addresses.
  • A description of your services…spelled and punctuated correctly.
  • A link to your website…and of course you have one!

Examples:

(note that these were active when I posted on July 25 at 12:30 p.m., but I can’t guarantee that they’ll be active when you read this post!)

Where should I post my resume or ad?

You want either Services > Creative OR Services > Writing/Editing/Translation.

Did the Craig’s List guide play a role in this? I.e., did you change the language of your ad based on its recommendations?

Not explicitly, but it inspired me to want to pimp myself more on Craigslist. I tried to keep the ad simple and to the point and to focus it directly to my target audience: people who need help with writing projects. The Craigslist Profit Guide reminded me that I don’t have to be everything to everyone–I just need to reach the people who will make me money.

Thanks for answering a question I have been thinking about for quite awhile. I do have one other question though; should I advertise in every major city on craigslist or should I be concentrating on my local area? Does that even matter?

Thanks again! I finally have an answer to one of my burning questions!

Nikki, great question. I rotate posting locations, and I don’t stick with just my local area since my services are applicable to people all over the world. BUT be careful not to post in multiple cities simultaneously. If you’re in NYC, LA, Chicago, San Diego, and Seattle all at the same time, you’re going to annoy people and you might be considered to be spamming in the Craigslist community.

That being said, if you have many different ads that are targeted toward different market segments in each city and aren’t just posting the same ad over and over and over, that’s a lot different.

So, my advice is to start local (post in the closest major metro area) and then expand outward one city at a time–without being spammy.

    Thanks Kristen!
What if I don’t have a PO box? Can I leave the street address out of my resume if I list it online?

One other thing, I still need to email you because I signed up for the challenge but don’t see my name listed :(

It’s ok though… I don’t have totals up through July for you right now either. I am working on it though! Little late on the data entry stuff myself!

Nikki, if you don’t have a PO box and don’t want to use your street address, I’d say to go with just an e-mail address and a phone number. I think you do need to have both of those, though.
