How to Handle the Holidays?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I blogged on this topic not too long ago at my new b5media blog Biz Chicks Rule, but I still don’t have any answers. That’s why I want to know how YOU handle the holidays in your freelance business.

  • Do you send cards and gifts? What kind, and to whom?
  • Do you offer special holiday-related discounts or sales?
  • Do you decorate your office or website for the holidays?

Leave a comment with your take on how businesses should address the holiday season.

I don’t send out holiday gifts to my clients, mainly because that can get expensive if done all in one clump. I do send coffee/tea mugs or other items, with my business logo on them, to clients once we’ve established a business relationship.

And each year, to try to avoid offending anyone regardless of the religious or secular holidays that they do or don’t celebrate, I send out end-of-the year greeting cards to my clients, thanking them for their business and wishing them the best in the coming year. In those cards, I enclose a one-sided mini business newsletter (see http://www.kokedit.com/KOK_Edit_News_2005.pdf for an example).

I usually send greeting cards, but I’m thinking of sending mini calendars next year. Most of my family members work in the auto industry, and that seems to be the preferred gift of body shops and suppliers to each other – I think every delivery man has a different body shop’s little calendar stuck to his dashboard.

James Brausch gives products away as Christmas presents (see http://www.jamesbrausch.com/?p=832 ), not just to clients but to whoever signs up within a certain timeframe. I’m not sure if he gets more sales out of the people who receive gifts or if he’s just really, really generous, but at the very least it’s a good way to ensure people read his blog (I know I’m going to be looking at it every single day next November…)
