What Happens When You Have No Time to Blog?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — How embarrassing that my last post, which sat up here for a few days, was a flipping McAfee coupon. Sheesh, sorry guys. This has been one of those weeks wherein everything takes twice as long as you think it will, crises come up out of nowhere, and the days fly by and are over without warning. And I know it’s been over a week, but am I the only one who’s not adjusted to Daylight Saving Time yet? Seriously, I should be used to it by now.

This is one of those posts that poses a question but doesn’t really answer it — because (1) I’m still working on it and (2) I want to know what you do. Are you a daily blogger come Hell or high water? Do you blog less frequently but still regularly? Or are you a “whenever I get around to it” type? And how do you prepare for vacations, unexpected illness, and other crises of a preventing-you-from-blogging nature? Leave a comment with your words of wisdom.

I try to blog everyday. But if something comes up and prevents me from doing so, it’s not a problem. Some days I just can’t be bothered with it. Other days I have to get it out. Of course, it’s more of a problem when I have three blogs going on top of my day job.

Daily blogging isn’t realistic for me, but I try to post at least twice a week. When I went on vacation, I opened up the blog to guest bloggers, which actually ended up being just as much work, but it was still fun. I also keep a few prewritten posts/ideas in reserves for when I get busy.

WordPress allows you to save drafts and set them to publish in the future, but Blogger doesn’t have that option, so I save them in my email and publish via email for a quick update without having to log in.

Every day blogger here. If I can. I figure it’s not a requirement that I appear on my own blog every weekday, but I try. Sometimes it’s three times a week, sometimes six. Depends on what I have to do and how busy I am.

I will say that for vacations, I leave a note up that I’m gone. Period. Everyone needs time off, and that includes time off from blogging.

  • I try to blog everyday. I am a better writer first thing in the morning, but I find that I come up with a lot of ideas when I’m not at my computer. I try to jot the ideas down when they come and then write after my first cup of coffee. It’s definitely a commitment to find time to blog daily though.

I blog on most days, because it helps me focus.

I blog AFTER my first 1K for the day, or they don’t get done, but then I blog and read other blogs, and go back to the other deadlined writing.

Blogging is part of my business routine, like checking my email for responses to pitches or searching for new jobs.

I often don’t blog when I’m on the road or on vacation, but if it’s a day where I’m at my desk — I blog.

I do the best that I can. I don’t always have fresh content but I try to post things relevant for the creatively self-employed blog.

  • I try to blog weekly on my main personal blog. I have a new one which wants postings 3x a week or more, but it is more topical that way. My main personal blog focuses on self-improvement, so the posts are designed to be more “thinking” posts. I don’t want to put irrelevant content in that and make it hard to find. That said, I kind of like my last post at the top, so I must be starting to think of the blog more like a web page, which I need to “unthink.” I do think it’s important for readers that you post regularly, but also that you do not trivialize your content by posting so often that they cannot keep up. Time to read others’ blogs is also limited.

  • I TRY to add content to my blog Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. When I’m in a strict frame of mind this happens. Sometimes the timeframes are more flexible and sometimes I just crumble into a heap of missed deadlines and postlessness.

If there is a secret to consistent productivity PLEASE share it with us!
