Writing Quote, January 29, 2010 — “Because You’ve Got Something to Say”

You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you’ve got something to say.
— F. Scott Fitzgerald

If you could tell the world one thing with your writing, what would it be?

If you could tell the world one thing with your writing, what would it be?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Are you writing to change the world? To make a statement? Or just to write?

There are a lot of reasons people put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, and they’re all equally valid. But Fitzgerald highlights two very different types of writing, a sentiment that seems an excellent match for Tuesday’s quote about being pulled by words.

Sometimes when we sit down to write, we’re not sure what we have to say or even what we might want to say. Does that mean we shouldn’t bother writing? Not at all. The important thing in writing is to listen to yourself. At times, we may start out thinking we’re going to write one thing and then end up writing something else entirely. That something else, the ideas that claw their way to the surface, I believe that is what Fitzgerald’s talking about when he says that we write because we have something to say.

What do you want to say with your writing? What’s the story that’s trying to bubble up to the surface each time you embrace the written word? And why haven’t you written it yet?

    Hi Kristen,
I just started reading your blog and really love what I see. I do write to convey purpose, but sometimes I think I am scared of putting it all down in one place – like the self-criticism will ultimately destroy it or something. I really like the medium you have set up here and look forward to connecting more.
    Thanks!
    Beth

My biggest issue with writing on my blog has always been ‘professionally’ expressing myself. I used to use my blog for venting and true experiences (names changed), then I learned the hard way clients do read the blog and know when something is about them (was not a great result). Since I have tamed down, but at the same time feel bottled up with things that I just feel the need to share.

  • That’s a really nice quote, really touched me right there. It’s true in a sense, but in more cases than not, both applies.

  • You pointed out the very interesting things in writing and it is really very helpful. I used to think that think writing doesn’t love me even though I love writing. LOL! Seriously, writing is my passion, I release my feelings through writing. It helps me burst out my emotions and I end up narrating what happened.

Love the quote and you know, sometimes I write to change the world, sometimes I write to make money, sometimes I just write – sometimes I’m pulled by words and sometimes I pulled by ideas…

Sometimes I’m passionate about writing and sometimes I’d rather take a walk or a nap.

How many of us are guilty of this though? The desire to write something hides the fact that we’ve actually got very little to say. Sometimes I think you do have to write to create ideas; although, that said, you don’t always have to share it.

There’s so much to say but yet so little to talk about. A good reminder for us all.

Love it… of course I’ve got something to say!

A blank page can be frightening but fortunately the best writers can’t contain their thoughts even if they wanted. Appreciate your thoughts.

Question for you, would freelance writers be interested in posting their articles on an information sharing website? I don’t know if freelancer feel it’s more important to get their writings online or get paid for everything? Appreciate your feedback.

    Thanks

A simple thing…but true! I always write better when the motivation comes from something inside me that I have to get out!

    Nice post!

Great minds think alike! I just posted something similar over at the Writing For Riches With Booklets blog!

I think getting started is the most important thing. If you want to write, there are so many ways you can do it now – and make an honest living too! But, I do believe you need to have something to say and a drive to say it. If you’ve got that, you’ve got gold!

The title itself of the blog really caught my attention. It was like encouraging every individual to write. Everything you have said was oh so true. Keep it up! :D

Me, I write, because I have passions, and I want to share my passion; because I enjoy stories, and I want to share that enjoyment; and because I want to make a difference. And because I want to become famous.

If you consider yourself a writer, why do you write? If you would like to consider yourself a writer, why do you write?

I have written for myself since I was a teenager and when I left uni it seemed the natural thing to do.Sometimes I write things down to process thoughts, though the more I write, the easier it is to write something that’s functionally complete the first time.

I love it! This truly hits the mark. There are just too many writers who don’t realize how influential their words are.
