Today was one of those days that it actually feels like work. Maybe it’s because Pickles got me up at the crack of dawn, maybe because it’s too cold out to really do anything, maybe it’s because I’m bummed that our offer on the house got rejected (hope is not lost, though, we just really need to sell our house), but I dragged all day today.
Do you ever have days like that? How do you keep yourself motivated? For me, it was the knowledge that if I didn’t keep going, I wouldn’t be able to make my deadlines for the rest of the week. I’ve more or less got every minute planned out over the next few days, and it really feels like it! Usually I don’t mind so much, but today, well, today the oh-so-compelling direct mail package from AWAI touting the wonder that is their copywriting program started looking really, really good. You know, except for the $39 x 13 payments part.
But the freedom to live the “retired life”? To travel? To live in Paris like one of the grinning testimonial-givers? That, I could get used to. That, and an extra hour or two of sleep a night. And on that note…

Dear Mom and Dad,
You’re the best. But did I say work? I meant money.

Thursday afternoon, I received an e-mail from a marketing person whom I’ve never met at a moderately sized academic press that I’ve never worked for inquiring about my interest in some copywriting. This morning, I sent them a letter of agreement for a big project. How did they know about me? Someone had forwarded them my name.
I’m hoping to find out who that was so I can send a thank-you note, but in the meantime, I’d like to reiterate that networking is one of the most powerful tools in the freelancer’s arsenal. Getting to know people in your field, attending conferences and seminars, and actively participating in discussion lists/forums/etc. are all outstanding ways to get in front of potential clients — and potential referrers.

This is kind of a no-brainer, but I’m participating in the Lieurance-King New Year’s Article Challenge. As part of the 21-day e-course co-host Suzanne and I are offering participants, I’m working on a list of potential article topics and beginning to outline some articles. It’s hard. Like, really hard. The thing is, I don’t think it’s actually that hard — I’m just making it difficult.
You see, I somehow got it in my head a few years ago that I’m not good at coming up with article ideas. Thus, I have a hard time coming up with article ideas. Part of the reason I really wanted to team up with Suzanne to do this challenge is that I wanted to help other people, and myself, get out of that “I can’t come up with any ideas!” mindset and just start writing.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

How are you doing on article ideas for marketing and queries?
