Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone As a Writer

www.inkthinkerblog.com

Over at WritingSpark, Alicia shares some great insight about querying publications whose mold she doesn’t quite fit. Here’s a taste:

…I’m wondering. Can a straight woman write for a lesbian magazine? Can a caucasian write for Ebony magazine? Can a man write for Cosmo? Or would these differences in the writer and the actual intended audience be too far out of margin?

Advice From Query Challenge Participant Sheila Scarborough

www.inkthinkerblog.com

Tell your readers to roll with the unexpected — one newspaper only wanted travel articles within Texas when I thought that would be the LAST thing they’d want, one editor apologetically turned down a piece because she herself is planning to take and write about the same trip, one editor wanted my work refocused from an area road trip to a single town, and although I planned to just assist in the NASCAR work the editor is sending me to a race as their sole writer.

One editor wanted a short turnaround, so I said I’d have the article in by Feb 2nd (tomorrow!) then my son was home from school throwing up for two days and I lost all that work time. It’ll sure be a busy day today for me. :)

Just keep plugging….

Interview With Kristen King at Urban Muse

www.inkthinkerblog.com

Check out querier extraordinaire Susan Johnston’s interview with yours truly at her Urban Muse blog. I might be just a teensy bit biased, but I think it’s a pretty good read. If nothing else, at least skim the part about the 2007 Inkthinker Query Challenge.

We Found Our Next House, But We Need Your Help!

www.inkthinkerblog.com

We’ve put an offer in on a house we really like. The only problem is that we can’t complete the purchase of our new home until we sell our townhouse. If you know anyone who might be interested in buying a beautiful, much-loved, low-maintenance end unit in an established townhome community in Fredericksburg, VA, would you please share the listing with them?

It’s 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and smack dab in the middle between DC and Richmond. It’s the perfect first home (we’ve loved it!), and great for commuters and busy families because of its location and zero-maintenance yard.

Thanks so much for anything you can do to help spread the word.

Gratefully yours,
Kristen and Jesse King
(and Pickles, Isabel, and Zoe, who want a yard to play in)
