I e-mailed the query Jan. 5 and the editor replied the next morning:
Tiffani,
I would be interested in this story, and the sources you have are great, but I would want at least 2 additional (local) sources, since we are a local magazine.
After adding the sources, I got this reply:
That sounds great. I could use approx. 1500 words — resources list (as a sidebar), and any photos any of your contacts might want to send us to use.
Hooray! The encouragement I get from your site and the members is great motivation.
Thanks so much,
Tiffani Hill-Patterson
Woohoo! Thanks for sharing, Tiffani. This is a great example of why loving the locals is a great idea.

As of this very moment, Susan Johnston is in the lead, with a whopping 18 queries in January, and I’m trailing way behind in Slackerville with only (gulp) 3 queries. (Flogging may commence once this post is finished.)

You already know that keeping a journal is a great habit for writers to get into, but did you know that the benefits extend beyond the creative? Heather Goldsmith over at A Creative Journal points out that journaling can also clue writers into bad habits they may have:
One benefit of rereading your journals is how you pick up your own annoying writing habits. Overuse of certain words is one of my annoying habits. While it’s easy to roll your eyes at your repetition and read on you might want to investigate why you’re using those particular words so often.
Is it sheer laziness? Could you find a better word to describe precisely what you’re writing about? Or does the word have some significance for you?
Read Heather’s article here, and try to keep an eye out for verbal tics you may have developed.
