Why I finally signed up for WritersMarket.com yesterday

www.inkthinkerblog.com

1. I paid for the deluxe print version a year ago and never activated the included membership.

2. I won a membership from the Best Writer’s Website Contest, but still hadn’t activated the first membership I had.

3. I needed to look up a market and couldn’t find info anywhere else.

4. I figured the 1-year membership length would motivate me to get a move on and actually use the thing to get some stuff published this year.

After an hour and a half of playing with WM online, I ended up with 106 potential markets — and I haven’t even scratched the surface of what I have in mind as possibilities. Who knew there were so many print mags out there? Well, I mean, I had an idea, but the total number is pretty impressive!

I’m thinking about putting together a monthly query challenge to take advantage of this resource. Who wants in? And how many should we shoot for? Leave your thoughts in comments.

Small changes make all the difference

I noticed an unfamiliar job title in an e-mail signature the other day: Administrative Antimacassar. I couldn’t help myself, so I had to ask, “What in the world does antimacassar mean?” Seriously, I was clueless. I thought about looking it up first, but figured it might make more sense coming straight from the horse’s mouth.

The reply made me laugh out loud:

It’s that doily thing you put on the back of an arm chair. I keep things from getting messy. I thought “administrative assistant” was so sloppily boring. I decided to find another A word with a similar number of syllables and wait for someone to call me out on it. I live on the edge.

How awesome is that? Evidently I am one of only two people who’ve noticed so far.
It got me thinking about how there are so many little things in our lives that drive us nuts, and we put up with them because we don’t really think there’s anything we can do about it. But this chick decided to go ahead and do something anyway, and she’s happier for it.
What small changes can you make in this brand new year to improve your freelance life to feel better every day?
I’m going to work on cleaning up my desk every evening before I “clock out” to avoid the stress I feel each morning when I go to work at a messy desk.

Quiz writing: A great idea

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Liz (a.k.a. KIWIWRITER) said I read her mind when I posted my links to goals and resolutions blog post earlier today, and she returned the favor when she mentioned an article she found about writing quizzes (courtesy of freelance guru Kelly James-Enger, published at Writing-World.com).

Writing quizzes is…
(a) something I’ve wanted to do forever
(b) something I’ve never thought of before
(c) something I think I’d be good at
(d) none of the above
(e) both a and c

Every time I pick up any magazine ever, I roll my eyes at the quizzes. I don’t know which is worse: the questions themselves, or the names of the results categories. I always think of Cosmo and teen mags when I think of cheezy quizzes.

That makes me…
(a) a Trash-Talkin’ Tramp?
(b) a Courageous Cuddler?
(c) a Daring Diva?
(d) a Man-Eating Mama?
(e) nauseated?

At any rate, I’m definitely going to add this article to my arsenal for 2007. Thanks for pointing it out, Liz!
