A Little Knowledge Is a Dangerous Thing

(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — I kinda, sorta, almost temporarily killed Inkthinker. That’s what I get for trying to do my own upgrade, which I had no business even attempting. But the Automatic Upgrade Plug-in seemed so easy! It was LYING. It is NOT easy, and because I tried to make it work, now the only thing functional on Inkthinker is the homepage. So, to that end, I won’t be putting up new posts until it’s fixed, which will hopefully be in the next few days.

I would say you should peruse the archives in the meantime, but since you can’t GET to the archives, that’s no help. So, thanks for hanging in there with me.

And for not laughing at me, even though I deserve it.

It’s That Time Again! Time to Nominate Your Favorite Website for Writers

prize win trophy champion(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — I read over on Freelance Parent and confirmed on Writing White Papers that nominations are now open for the 2008/2009 Top 10 Blogs for Writers competition. As of this post, there are already more than 200 nominations and “Me too!”s, with a ton of awesome blogs in the mix.

Some favorites of mine that are in the running, in no particular order:

Please visit the nomination post for the third annual Top 10 Blogs for Writers competition and nominate your favorite writing blog. And hey, if it happens to be Inkthinker, I would love to have your vote.

Nominations are due by September 12. Winners are not decided by number of votes, but a blog must have more than one vote to make the cut and be considered for a place on the Top 10.

Go! Nominate! Vote!

911 for Writer’s Block: Dial Your Way to Good Ideas

(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — I knew I loved StumbleUpon for a reason. The next time you’re stuck on your novel, short story, whatever, all you have to do is let your fingers do the walking. Or your mouse, anyway. That’s what Writer’s Block 911 is all about.

It’s a fun, interactive application for writers. Need an idea to move you foward? Dial 1 for Settings, 2 for Characters, 3 for Dramatic Entrances, 4 for Dialogue, 5 to Commiserate, 6 for Verbs, 7 for Calisthenics, 8 to Kill a Character, and 9 for Endings.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

What’s Your Biggest Financial Fear As a Freelancer?

dollar money cash income finances figures(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — Miranda at Yielding Wealth posted an insightful article about financial fears last week that really hit home for me.

Miranda’s top financial fears:

  1. Losing a lucrative regular gig.
  2. Having something happen to the car.
  3. Her husband won’t be able to find a job when he’s done with his PhD.

My top financial fears:

  1. Losing a lucrative regular gig.
  2. Having something happen to one of the dogs. (Oh, wait, that DID happen!)
  3. My husband will lose his job and not have a new one. (Oh, wait, that happened, too!)

So far, I’m 2 for 3. I don’t like the trend. But interestingly, the world didn’t stop turning when my worst fears came true.

What I liked about Miranda’s post is that she took a very positive approach to her fears by describing how she will confront them and even potentially prevent them. What are YOUR worst financial fears, and how will you deal?

Exciting Bonus for AIW Seminar Attendees: Push the Electronic Envelope

(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — I was really hoping this would come through, and it DID! A bonus for registered attendees for the AIW Push the Electric Envelope seminar this Saturday: Network Solutions is offering free one-on-one consultations for those who want to improve their existing website or anyone who’s ready to take the plunge and get online.

Because time on site at the seminar is limited, those consultations are first come, first serve. But great news: Anyone who doesn’t get a consultation at the seminar can request a phone conference instead, at their leisure. Slots are 15 minutes beginning at 9:15 and going throughout the morning and afternoon sessions. Sign up for your slot when you check in at the seminar on Saturday morning. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

What? You didn’t register yet? What are you waiting for? Check out the full seminar program.
