Resources for Organizing Your Office and Your Life

www.inkthinkerblog.com — This is a three-fer post, appearing at Biz Chicks Rule, Lively Women, and Inkthinker because it is just so darn applicable to all of us. I’ve collected some of my favorite blogs about getting organized into a handy-dandy list, and I want to share it with you. Here the are, in no particular order (though my fav-favs tend to be toward the top):

What have I missed? Add your favorites in the comments. And if you want to see the collected, updated list at a glance, check out the blogrolls at Lively Women and Biz Chicks Rule, where I will keep adding on based on your suggestions.

Still Working on Your Taxes? Win Free Tax Software!

www.inkthinkerblog.com — TaxGirl Kelly Phillips Erb is giving away 40 free copies of TaxCut software to blog readers. Go here for details. Hurry up, because it’s first come, first served.

Now, on a more Inkthinker-related note, do you do your own taxes, or do you use an accountant? And do you file annually or quarterly? At the moment, I’m filing annually and using an accountant. I doubt I’ll ever be doing them on my own, but I suspect that this year I’ll have to start filing quarterly. We’ll have to see what my account says… I’ll keep you posted.

Leave a comment about YOUR tax sitch.

Deb Ng Sells Freelance Writing Jobs to James Chartrand

www.inkthinkerblog.com — April Fools Day was probably not the best timing for this announcement, but today Deb Ng formally announced that she has decided to sell Freelance Writing Jobs to James Chartrand of Men With Pens. I’m shocked. I’m saddened. And I’m also excited.

I know this freelance thing is a tough business, but I didn’t realize it was so tough that we’re losing the troops, and especially not pillars like Deb. This is one of those moments that I don’t really know how to feel. I’m proud of her for making what I know was a very difficult decision, but I’m also, honestly, kind of devastated. Deb’s site and Deb herself are staples in my writing life! And although I know she won’t disappear, I don’t like change — and this is a big one.

That being said, I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather see take the reins of FWJ than James Chartrand. He’s class all the way, and a great writer. I think the community will be in very capable hands.

UPDATE!

They confessed — it was a TERRIBLE April Fool’s joke. Deb, we are so in a fight.

Falling Back in Love With That Project You Just Don’t Want to Do

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Is there something wrong between you and The Project? Do you find yourself fantasizing about other projects when you’re supposed to be working on The Project? Does the thought of spending time with The Project make you want to fake a sudden, extreme headache and lie on the couch with a cool cloth over your eyes?

When breaking up is not an option, here are four ways to fall back in love with The Project — or at least get it off your desk.

  1. Remember the money. If nothing else, getting this project finished and invoiced means more money in your bank account. And although most of us aren’t in the writing biz because we believe it will make us fabulously wealthy beyond our wildest dreams, we do like to pay our bills. Well, maybe we don’t like actually paying bills, but having them paid is critical to continuing the lifestyle to which we have been accustomed. No completion, no money. Now get to work.
  2. Remember the status. Every project you complete is one more item to put on your resume or credit list, one more piece of evidence that you’re an amazing freelancer, and one more client who will give you rave reviews when asked to provide a reference. Even if you don’t love the work, think of it as a stepping stone in your career, and just put one foot in front of the other.  [continue reading…]

Beating Procrastination: Find Your Root Cause

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Do you ever find yourself spacing out in front of the computer screen, or maybe jumping from website to website, or compulsively checking your e-mail when you should be working? Yeah, me too. I’ve mentioned in the past that my “multi-tasking” is really anything but. In fact, it eats up hours every week if I let it. But I finally figured out what leads to those frantic bouts of imitation productivity:

  1. I’m hungry. For some reason, I have it in my head that no matter what, I should not get up from my desk when I’m working. Stupid, I know. So instead of getting something to eat when I start losing my focus, I force myself to SIT STILL and PAY ATTENTION, which totally fails because I’m hungry and can’t concentrate anyway. Note to self: There is nothing inherently evil about taking a lunch break. Or a snack break. Or several.
  2. I’m tired. Taking a nap doesn’t generally fit into my daily schedule, but there are other things I could do to perk up and boost my energy when I just can’t keep together. Trotting to the end of the cul de sac and back with the dogs is one. Sitting in the sun for a few minutes to stretch my eyes and get some natural light into my system. Drinking a cup of fruit juice or some coffee is another. Note to self: The best solution is to get a little more sleep at night so it’s not a problem in the first place. [continue reading…]
