How to Handle the Holidays?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I blogged on this topic not too long ago at my new b5media blog Biz Chicks Rule, but I still don’t have any answers. That’s why I want to know how YOU handle the holidays in your freelance business.

  • Do you send cards and gifts? What kind, and to whom?
  • Do you offer special holiday-related discounts or sales?
  • Do you decorate your office or website for the holidays?

Leave a comment with your take on how businesses should address the holiday season.

Is LinkedIn Valuable for Freelance Professionals?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — In a word, yes. Freelancers know that the key to success, after having a quality product and good prices and being easy to work with, is networking, and LinkedIn makes it easy for even the shyest among us to be champion networkers. Since joining LinkedIn this summer, I’ve built a network of more than 100 connections, and through those 100+ individuals I’m connected to more than 400,000 people, any of who may have a need for my services at any given time. LinkedIn allows you to search your connections and THEIR connections for job opportunities, answers to your pressing business questions, and any other information you may want to track down. You also have the chance to respond to other people’s questions and develop a reputation as an expert, which is certainly handy. My recommendation? Check it out. And when you sign up, link to me! 9 Words That Don’t Mean What You Think, from Cracked.com

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I found this collection of 9 words that are frequently used incorrectly from Cracked.com on StirrdUp this morning. But more than a standard commonly misused words (think what you see in the back of a steno pad), there’s extensive hilarious commentary and a ratings scale for how much of a moron you are for using it wrong, which I find quite funny, intellectual snob that I am.

Here are the words:

  1. Irregardless (my pet peeve)
  2. Peruse
  3. Ironic
  4. Pristine
  5. Nonplussed
  6. Bemused
  7. Enormity
  8. Plethora
  9. Deceptively

Now go check it out!

Confess: Have you used any of these words incorrectly? Leave a comment.

Here Are Quick Ways To Make Blogging Easier
by Hope Wilbanks

Let’s face it…blogging can become a burden sometimes. You’re busy running a business and sometimes you just run out of things to say. Right? Well, I have some great ideas for you. These ideas will help make writing blog posts a lot easier and quicker for you. Here they are:

  • Subscribe to RSS feeds. Believe it or not, you can some great ideas from reading RSS feeds regularly. This is a good way to stay updated on current events and what’s going on in other parts of the world. Subscribe to feeds within your niche and you’ll never be empty-handed for ideas.
  • Blog about the latest news. This is a really good way to write a blog post that will generate comments. You can pull snippets of news stories from the web and use them as inspiration for new blog entries. Write your thoughts on the news item, and how it relates to you and your customers/clients.
  • Write a review. There are endless reviews you can write: books, movies, music, websites, magazines, etc. The ideas are endless. You can really write a review on just about anything.
  • Write several blog entries at one time. If you find yourself pressed for time when it comes to blogging, why not write several entries all at once? Then you can set them up to be published at a later date.
  • Turn one long blog post into a 2- or 3-part series. If you find yourself getting long-winded about a certain topic, cut your post in half, or third, and set up a series of posts. This is a great way to build suspense and keep your readers coming back for more, too!
  • Use quotes to spark ideas. I love quotes. When I get stuck, I like to pull out a quote and write about it. You can do the same. Write about how it relates to your current life. Write about that person, and the history behind the quote.
