(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — Originally created in honor of Freelance Writers Appreciation Week 2009, here is a list of my top 100 books for freelance writers, updated for 2020. This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the books out there for freelancers (despite how exhausting it may or may not have been to compile), but it’s a place to start. Some of them are oldies but goodies and still worth hunting down even after many years!
Get ’em new, get ’em used, get ’em on Kindle, get ’em from the library — just get ’em!
Know a book that should be on this list? Please contact me or leave a comment so I can add it!

Did I miss a book you just love? Contact me with the title and author, and I’ll add it to the next iteration of this list.
NOTE: You’ll notice, if you add it all up, that the total is 101; that’s because Writer’s Market is listed under both books and magazines. How could I pick just one category for that must-have resource?
Please note: This post contains affiliate links, so I may get a small kickback if you purchase any of the items I’ve recommended, but it doesn’t cost you another penny.

Holy cats! This must have taken forever. Awesome list. I’ll be recommending it at FWJ.
Deb Ng´s last blog post..Freelance Writing Jobs for Monday February 9, 2009
I am amazed at this looooooooooong list! I agree with Deb… it must have taken forever to do this.
Wow, I don’t have most of these. I do have: Problogger, The Chicago Manual of Style, The Elements of Style, The Street-Smart Writer, Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer, The Copywriter’s Handbook, The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters that Rock, The Writer’s Market (although my copy is 2007).
Some I have (and love) that I don’t see here are:
*Freelancing for Newspapers, by Sue Fagalde Lick (Anyone interested in writing for newspapers will love this one.)
*Grammar Girl, by Mignon Fogarty (This is so entertaining and the grammar and usage tricks and tips that are in here are so easy to learn and remember–I loved it! I just finished it, so I’ll be reviewing it sometime soon.) ;-)
*The Associated Press Stylebook (FULLY REVISED AND UPDATED)
Great stuff here, Kristen. Thanks for all the hard work you put into it–I’m going to give it a stumble and a couple of different ones caught my eye.
*smiles*

Great list!! Have some and will be getting some more.
Peter Bowerman was the guy who inspired me, so my first two selections would match yours. Jack Hart’s “A Writer’s Coach” is great and so is “On Writing” by Stephen King. You should check those out if you’re reading this.
