No one plans to fail, but many fail to plan

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I read this great post over at The Renegade Writer Blog about creating a daily schedule to maximize your time. Author Jennifer has kids and a work-at-home husband, so she’s got to juggle her family commitments and her work commitments while supporting her husband’s as well. It sounds like the two of them have worked out a great plan, and I’m feeling inspired to come up with a schedule of my own in light of my recent organization kick.

I also really enjoy Ayana Glaze’s September article “Have you created your annual success plan?” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: What better way to track your progress than to figure out where you’re going in the first place? I’m a big fan of regular goal setting, but I know how easy it is to let stuff like that fall by the wayside when you’re focused on getting through the current project while lining up the next one.

Try to look at the big picture on a weekly or monthly basis. Where do you want to be? Where are you right now? What can you do to get closer to your desired destination? ‘Tis the season to look back on the successes and failures of the year and think about what you can do to increase the former and decrease the latter in 2007.

Post some of your goals in the comments section!

I wasn’t kidding about Wordpreneur

www.inkthinkerblog.com — When I mentioned that I was newly addicted to Wordpreneur, I wasn’t messing around. This may be my new favorite blog for the business of writing. I haven’t found an article there that I didn’t like, and I’ve found about half a dozen that I love:

The Hard Facts About Editing – what it is and why you need it
Freelance Writing on the Internet – various types of jobs available to those seeking freelance work online
Increase Freelance Sales With an Online Resume! – the value of a strong website and writing resume
Sowing the Seeds of Opportunity: How to Multiply Your Freelance (Writing) Work – mastering the art of the freelance “up-sell”
How to Discover Your Primary Market – identifying and targeting your ideal clients
Boost Your Income with Trade Journals – kind of a self-explanatory title

Check out these articles and the others at Wordpreneur.

Mmm, poetry

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Check out this article in the Sunday Times about poet Paul Muldoon. It’s a fun read, and very interesting.

5 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Karen over at A Writer’s Blog just tagged me for a short meme, 5 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me. Read her responses here. Read mine below.

1. I’m a former Sussex County Honey Queen (click here to learn a little about my experience with honeybees) and a former Miss Green Township. For the second pageant, which I won during my senior year of high school, I beat out my arch nemesis, who was one of my best friends from sixth grade through ninth grade, when she went all Mean Girls on me. The $500 prize, the gift bag, and the fame were just gravy.

2. I have a thing for boys whose names begin with the letter J. From fifth grade through high school, I dated/”went out with” (translation: had awkward phone calls after school or in the evenings but never actually went anywhere or acknowledged each other’s existence otherwise) or had crushes (some a bigger waste of time/self-respect than others) on the following J’s: Jeff H., Joey M., Jeff W., Joey L., Jimmy, Joe R., Jon M., and Joe C., and then I married a guy named Jesse.

3. I can’t curl my tongue. I am the only person in my family who lacks this talent. When I was little, it used to make me cry.

4. I love to play Dance Dance Revolution, but I’m so terrible (and cheap!) that I do it only in the privacy of my own home, not at any of the arcades.

5. When I was 15, I spent a week in Lake George, New York, with my best friend at the time (who was arrested in 2005 for stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise by posing as Jessica Simpson’s best friend and personal assistant–several years after we lost touch, I swear) pretending that I was visiting from England. My name was Fiona Garret, and I spoke with an accent for 6 solid days. People believed me, despite how poor my accent actually was.

Who I’m tagging:
Dana (payback, finally!)
Jeff
Anne
Carson
Janet

Movie recommendation: Stranger Than Fiction

www.inkthinkerblog.com — We went to see Stranger Than Fiction last night (Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, et al) and absolutely loved it. If you’re a writer, man, you’re going to love it too. I don’t want to give anything away because that would positively ruin it, but I will say that I thought it was remarkably well written, well cast, and well performed, and I really appreciated the literary aspect of it (which, admittedly was like the whole movie). I can’t wait until it’s out on DVD.
