www.inkthinkerblog.com — Pickles scared the living daylights out of me about 15 minutes ago when she magically appeared in the office. When I last saw her, she was sleeping on the couch, downstairs, on the other side of the baby gate that keeps her from sneaking up the steps. I briefly thought she had learned to fly, until I discovered that hubby had moved the gate when he left for work and I didn’t realize it.
On a related note, the neighbor’s dog WON’T SHUT UP. I don’t know what is wrong with these people that they leave their barking dog outside 24 hours a day, but it’s getting old FAST. Last fall it was so bad that I actually called the police one night around midnight. They’re better in the evenings than they used to be, but lucky me, I get to listen to their precious yapper all. freakin’. day.
Today’s game plan:
– proof an eight-page newsletter in PDF
– edit 3 medical articles and 6 short book chapters
– get moving on editing for my friend Kristen’s book manuscript, which I’ve had entirely too long and simply haven’t finished yet
– follow up with a client who’s reviewing a letter of agreement
– follow up with a new potential copyediting client who send me a test before I went on vacay and needs to give me instructions
– leave for school ON TIME
Incidentally, this weekend I attended a meeting of the Riverside Writers Club. Despite the fact that I’ve lived in Fredericksburg for 6 years, I had never heard of this long-established group until last week, when I stumbled across one of their fliers at the library and hey, whaddya know, there was a meeting only a few days later. I had a wonderful time and met some cool folks, including freelance writer and columnist Mary Coffman-Burke, who evidently lives in my area. Yay! Local writers!

www.inkthinkerblog.com — …because my desk still looks basically like the “before” photos I posted earlier.

I guess it’s more like a “during” picture.
But I did open all of my mail, and some of the piles are now in different places, so that’s progress. Yes, I need to celebrate the small victories today.

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I have to cancel some of my magazine subscriptions. I don’t even know why I’m subscribed to some of these–I barely have time to read Writer’s Digest and Publisher’s Weekly, so The Writer, The New Yorker (which I’ll never cancel, honest), Atlantic Monthly, Kenyon Review, Gettysburg Review, Tin House, Good Housekeeping, Southern Living, Fitness, Reader’s Digest, Parents, Cosmo, Marie Clare, The Sun, and like half a dozen others that I can’t even remember are just PILING UP–not to mention my daily home delivery of the Washington Post. It’s going to be hard to let them go, but I can’t take it anymore!
How do you deal with your desire for research (and write-offs) without risking being crushed by towering stacks of periodicals you never actually read despite your good intentions?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — I am feeling totally overwhelmed by the amount of STUFF sitting on my desk. I vacuumed the office yesterday, so the floor piles got moved to the already-overflowing desk surface, and now I just feel like my head is going to explode! Don’t believe me?

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Highlights from the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival included hearing Lucille Clifton perform “Homage to My Hips” and listening to readings by Brian Turner, Terrance Hayes, and Len Roberts.

Lucille Clifton performs (and my seat was really bad)
I also enjoyed comments from Mark Doty, Kurtis Lamkin, and Ekiwah Adler Beléndez.
And of course, I was thrilled to find Late Wife, by my former creative writing professor, recent Pulitzer Prize winner Claudia Emerson, on the books table with a big “Pulitzer Prize Winner” sticker on it.
But I think my favorite part of the festival was palling around with my best friend, another Jersey native who transplanted to Virginia a few years after I did.
