If You Had 30 Minutes Alone With Peter Bowerman…

What Burning Questions Would You Ask Peter Bowerman?www.inkthinkerblog.com — …what would you ask him?

This is the question on my mind right now. Last summer, I won a free coaching session with the well-fed writer himself, and I have yet to use it. I’m not scared of talking to him or anything like that — I’ve met the guy and he’s super cool. I don’t think I’m scared of asking stupid questions, as I’m quite confident he’s gotten dumber inquiries than anything I may want to ask him.

Partly I’m scared of wasting it, I think. Thirty minutes with the guy who, for me, defined freelance writing. Thirty minutes to ask him anything I want, to get advice on any aspect of my career. What’s the best way to use that time? It’s not like I can’t buy more. (I mean, the guy does sell coaching services.) The thing is, I think I know just enough about what I should be doing that I don’t have any questions about what I can do differently. I know WHAT to do, and I have a concept of how to do it. I’m just lacking in the execution area.

I’m not sure it’s lack of motivation, but maybe rather lack of confidence. Shooting for $100K is a big deal. What if I fail? Publicly and badly?

Well, what if I fail? Who cares? It’s not like I’m going to starve. But failure as a writer is not an option — it would just be failure to meet some arbitrary goal.

So back to my dilemma. I know how to write. Apparently, I can run a pretty decent business. So is my question, “How do I do it better?”

What would YOU ask if you had 30 minutes alone with Peter Bowerman? Leave a comment.

Technical Difficulties

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Intermittent Internet problems are dramatically interfering with my ability to post, e-mail, and do my work. Can I stress again how much I HATE my ISP? HughesNet sucks. Seriously. I’m paying almost $200/month for the crappiest customer service and least reliable connection I have ever encountered or even heard of. And I don’t have any other options. Rarr. Please bear with me. I’ll be back soon with some good content, I swear.

Guest Article: Copywriting Tips – Top Tips For 2008 And Beyond

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Copywriting Tips – Top Tips For 2008 And Beyond
By Steven Wagenheim

Everybody is getting ready for the new year. We’ve put 2007 behind us and now it’s time to focus our attention on what’s to come. Even though copywriting doesn’t really change much from year to year, there are some things I want to share with you in this article that I think will greatly improve your sales copy for 2008. It is my hopes that after you are done reading this that you’ll be ready to tackle the year ahead and have the best one that you’ve ever had, whatever your goals are.

The first, and maybe most important tip I can give you is to learn from your 2007 mistakes. Hopefully, you tracked the results of your sales copy. If not, that’s the first thing that you MUST correct. It is imperative to know what effects the changes that you make to your copy have on your bottom line. If you don’t know whether a new headline performs better or worse than the previous version, how do you know which version to keep when testing your next headline against it? So testing and tracking is absolutely critical if you’re going to write the most effective copy possible.

My second tip is to constantly study the sales copy that you see each day, especially the ones that are the top products in the Clickbank marketplace. There is a reason why these products sell so well. One of those reasons is that the sales copy is so well written. You can learn so much just from studying the sales copy of other writers. I do this daily. I try to read at least one sales copy page per day to get new ideas. Sometimes I don’t find anything new. Other days, I find real gems.

My final tip is to develop a voice for your copy. What I mean is this. Every great copywriter, regardless of what niche they write for, has a voice. You can tell their style a mile away. They work very hard at creating this voice. It’s what separates them from the other copywriters. My voice is my to-the-point no nonsense style. I am very direct with my copy. For that matter, I am very direct with everything I write. It’s what most people appreciate about me. No bull…just straight talk. Some copywriters inject a lot of humor into their copy. Others will paint vivid pictures. Whatever you do, make sure you do it on a consistent basis so that people will begin to recognize and respect your style of writing.

The above three tips will help you greatly in taking your copywriting to the next level in 2008.

To YOUR Success,

Steven Wagenheim

Free Book on Blogging From People Who May or May Not Know What They’re Talking About

www.inkthinkerblog.com — Yeah, you heard me. Here’s the deal: These people are giving this book away for free to anyone who mentions it on a blog. I want it, so I’m mentioning it. If you want it, you can mention it, too. But you can also wait for my review, which I should be posting this week unless it’s MUCH longer than I expect it to be.

UPDATED (about 30 min later):

I signed up and got the link, shuffled through some completely-not-related-to-blogging promo stuff, and then found myself looking at a 40 day life-improvement course, which is the only thing “unlocked” in my little dashboard. The “blogging” course is “locked,” so I don’t know what the deal is. I am going to contact support. I do not recommend that you post and download at this point, but I’ll fill you in once I learn more.

ANOTHER UPDATE

This is the “support ticket” I am entering at their 24-hour support site:

Subject: Your offer of a free blogging course appears to be a gross misrepresentation

I posted links and entered my information under the impression from your promotional materials that upon doing so I would be taken to a blogging course. Instead, I had to scroll through several hundred words worth of a direct mail pitch before finally getting to something remotely usable, and then it turns out that the only thing I can access is what appears to be a personal-power-type life improvement course and the blogging course I was promised is locked on my dashboard.

So now I’m signed up for something I don’t want, and presumably related e-mail that I also don’t want, did not get the thing I actually wanted, and posted your false advertisement on my blog, which has the potential to damage my credibility with my readership.

The only acceptable resolution to this situation is that you unsubscribe me from Simple-ology 101, give me immediate access to the blogging course I was promised in your little promo code and introductory letter, and immediately redirect others who sign up in the future to the information you promise in your offer.

Please advise immediately.

Sincerely,
Kristen King

YET A THIRD UPDATE

Their response, in part:

Our apologies for the inconvenience, the FREE Blogging Course is now “active” and “unlocked” in your Simpleology Account. Kindly log in to your Account and you will find the link of the Blogging course in the lower right side of the screen entitled “Electives” – “Blogging”.

Apparently the issue was a “system problem.” I would be VERY interested to know whether anyone else who posts the link and attempts the download has the same problem. Please leave a comment and let me know what happens either way whether you have the same problem.

After logging in following receipt of the message above, I have been able to access the course with no problem. I will still plan to post a review, BUT it’s a 15-part course, so it won’t be a complete review next week. Depending on how quickly I can get through it and how worthwhile it is to explore each individual section in a review, I may post partial reviews along the way.

Required text and links to get the freebie:

I’m evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they’re letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it’s still free.
